Purim 5770

Purim 5770 falls on Saturday night and Sunday Feb. 27-28 for most places, and Sunday night and Monday, Feb 28 and March 1 for walled cities like Jerusalem.

Purim is not amongst the major Jewish Holidays, it is not a full fledged chag, however it is a major minor-holiday.

Purim 5770: Mitzvah

Some relate to the main Purim 5770 Mitzvah of the day as the reading of the Megillah, which we read in shul both at night and during the day. However, besides the reading of the Megillah on Purim there is another Mitzvah and then also some more.

Mishloach Manot – giving a gift of food, at least two different kinds of food to at least one person.

Matanos La’Evyonim – giving gifts, of charity, usually money, at least one gift (each) to at least two poor people.

Mishta VeSimcha – making a festive meal, including drinking alcoholic beverages, in particular wine.
