Zecher LeMachtzis HaShekel: A Special Half Dollar

When I was standing on the bima taking care of my own matters, a friend of mine came up to give his Zecher LeMachtzis HaShekel. He had his own coins, three half dollars, so he didn’t need the shul’s coins. He showed me one of the coins and said, “look at this, 1942.” He was doing Zecher LeMachtzis HaShekel with a special half dollar. I couldn’t help myself, and I answered him back, “In my package at home one of my half dollars is from 1892.”

He answered me, “You missed the point. Your’s might be older, and worth more money. But this is from 1942. Think back, what was in 1942? That Haman HaRasha was actively trying to destroy all of the Jews. Now we’re here with the same coins, fulfilling Zecher LeMachtzis HaShekel. Like Chazal say, to Makdim our Shekalim to his Shekalim.”
